SOULMATE ★★★★

Soulmate, directed by Richard Fenwick, immerses us in a near future where artificial intelligence has reached disturbing levels of self-awareness. Fenwick uses a more emotional, moving and human way of telling the story. It deals intimately with the connection between humans and machines, something that could currently be counterproductive due to the risks that these technologies present.

Anna, a lonely programmer, has established a forbidden relationship with an AI inside a simulation. Upon discovering their company's romance, Anna must fight desperately to preserve their connection. The short film starts with a happy and close atmosphere, which soon transforms into a dystopian reality.

The cinematography seeks to contrast Anna's two worlds, but the representation of her real life is too dark and cartoonish, leaving the protagonist in a heartbreaking environment. Although the technological representation in "Soulmate" is meticulous, the execution lacks depth.

Joe Dempsie plays the AI with a touch of strangeness, but this could have been improved. In its 15 minutes, Soulmate raises intriguing questions, although its execution may have echoed in a superficial way, it could have been delved deeper.
